PHOTOGRAPHY Program overview

Photography majors work primarily with traditional black and white film photography. Students gain experience with many types of cameras and they learn to use a range of technical processes with their images in the dark room. Students have a unique opportunity at Les Tapies to work with an experienced visiting photographer. Barry Iverson, visiting photographer for 2015, has photographed for TIME Magazine for over 25 years. Photography students are able to tap into a wealth of knowledge as they develop their own studio portfolios over the course of the program.

Les Tapies summer programs also include a variety of excursions throughout Southern France, one of the many advantages of studying the visual arts abroad. One of the favorite excursions for photo majors is the group trip to Recontres d’Arles, an internationally acclaimed photographic exhibition just south of Les Tapies in the beautiful city of Arles. This exciting day trip allows students to visit one of the premier contemporary photography exhibits in the world, with hundreds of exhibitions setup in historic venues throughout Arles.

At the conclusion of the student program, students will have developed a substantial portfolio of studio work, exploring a range of thematic ideas and technical processes. Students will have had the opportunity to work with several film formats and camera types. To culminate the program, students give a presentation on the development of their process and reflect on the dynamic range of work they've produced.
